10/5/2023 0 Comments Wizards with guns and magic![]() Need someone to make things, build them out the concept of making things.įirst off, here is a post I meant on the so-called Winchester Spell, a bit of magic meant to increase the power of a gun shot to huge degrees. Actually the most technologically inclined group of the whole setting are the Noske, which small fairy-ish people made by the ancient elves to do mundane tasks who compulsively tinker because they're ontologically imbued with the idea of dabbling and fabricating things, cause that's how the ancients did stuff. My world is mostly a mix of antiquity (the Tawy Empire is kinda like an early mesopotamian empire that never ended and became classic greece) and very early medieval (the Alde Kingdoms are Beowulf/viking-y), with a couple really ancient civilizations (like the Warlocks of Lzeng have existed since about when Conan times are supposed to have been) are pretty much pure magic types. I didn't include them in my setting, aside maybe the Four Kingdoms having gunpowder rockets type mounted weapons, except magic-propelled instead of gunpowder. ![]() The unique* runes aren’t totally unique, a lot of people over time have found that other people or people in the past have had the same abilities as them, but the “unique” runes aren’t things that other people can use in general. Bandits often use them since most people who aren’t involved in warfare don’t know how to use the “tech destroying ancient rune” and everyone has a specific rune that’s unique* to them which they get when they react age 13, and one of the characters has rune which lets him shape metal with enough precision that he can carve runes into metal, letting him carve the necessary structures fast enough that even if a gun he uses is destroyed, he can repair it quickly enough that it’s still worth using guns. I will say though that there are some characters that use guns. ![]() The world building here is pretty abnormal since it’s less “how would X Y and Z make the world progress?” And more “If X and Y made Z happen, and Z wasn’t the desired outcome, how would this near omnipotent being change things to get his desired result?” It’s range is long enough to mess up most guns right after they come into range, and any time technology advances to increase that maximum range, the being adjusts the power of that specific ancient rune. One of these is a rune which is essentially a large EMP that destroys or at least breaks inorganic rune structures. Part of the way these systems are regulated are with “Ancient Runes” which are much more powerful, and very specific abilities that serve to keep the world functioning in the way that it is. He created the runes and made them things that everyone could use. The whole magic system and many of the properties of the world as a whole were created by a near omnipotent magical being who wished to shape the world in a specific way. So some of the lore behind the setting is that magic isn’t actually inherently available to most people and the system of runes isn’t natural to the world. While it's gratuitous overkill against flesh, this is what's necessary to overcome the absurdly strong armour people can make and even then, a strike to the centre of a chestplate, where the armour is thickest, is unlikely to penetrate. These guns shoot large bullets with such great energy that they have been known to (explosively) cut people in half at the hips with a single shot. Overall this lets pretty much any gun fire bullets at more than twice the rate and velocity that a normal gun might.Īs most people have figured out that durability-enchanted armour is pretty good at stopping bullets, gun designers decided to start making anti-armour magic guns of higher calibers. This reduces the need to clean the barrel and removes energy loss due to heating of the barrel almost entirely. When fired the barrel magically exerts a compressive force on the expanding gas from the propellant, preventing it from touching the barrel walls entirely. The increased durability of the barrel allows it to remain accurate for longer while making use of more powerful propellants that would otherwise cause the gun to blow up. Gun barrels are typically made with powerful durability and force enchantments. Here's an example from my own setting: Objects can easily be given simple enchantments such as increasing durability and exerting a force on something. ![]() It can be a flintlock pistol, bolt action rifle, autocannon or railgun. Size and means of propulsion don't matter. To clarify I'm using "guns" very loosely here to encompass any weapon that shoots a projectile at very high speed through a tube. Secondary Question: How do you feel about magic and guns being in the same setting? For those with a setting that has guns how does this impact magic users and how does magic impact the design and use of guns?
